Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is Arestin safe?

Yes. Arestin is FDA-approved and has been used in dental practices for many years. It’s generally very well tolerated.

Does Arestin replace deep cleaning?

No, it’s used in addition to scaling and root planing—not as a standalone treatment. Think of it as a booster to help your gums heal more thoroughly.

Will I feel anything during or after the application?

Most patients feel nothing during placement. Some mild tenderness may occur afterward, especially if your gums were already inflamed, but discomfort is usually minimal.

Can I eat or drink normally after Arestin?

We recommend avoiding hard, sticky, or crunchy foods for about a week to allow the medication to stay in place and do its job. We'll give you specific instructions at your visit.

How long does Arestin stay active?

The microspheres release antibiotics gradually for up to 21 days. After that, the medication is fully absorbed and does not need to be removed.

Can Arestin be used more than once?

Yes. If gum pockets persist or return at future visits, Arestin can be placed again as part of your ongoing periodontal maintenance.

Are there side effects?

Side effects are rare but may include mild irritation, tenderness, or allergic reactions (particularly if you're allergic to tetracycline antibiotics). Let us know if you have any known allergies or sensitivities.

Who Should Avoid Arestin?

While Arestin® is safe and effective for most patients, there are a few situations where it may not be recommended:

  • Allergy to tetracyclines: Arestin contains minocycline, a type of tetracycline antibiotic. If you have a known allergy to this class of antibiotics, you should not use Arestin.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding: Tetracycline-based medications are not recommended during pregnancy or while nursing, as they may affect the developing bones and teeth of the baby.
  • Children under 8 years old: Because tetracyclines can affect tooth and bone development, Arestin is not indicated for young children.
  • Severe or uncontrolled periodontal disease: In cases where surgical intervention is needed, Arestin may not be sufficient and should be used only as part of a broader treatment plan.
