Anxiety-Free Dentistry That Wears Off Quickly — Back to Your Day in Minutes
At our practice, we understand that dental anxiety can be a barrier to getting the care you need. Nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas,” is a safe, fast-acting sedative that helps you feel calm and comfortable throughout your periodontal procedure—without putting you to sleep.
What Is Nitrous Oxide?
Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative inhaled through a small, soft nose mask. It’s mixed with oxygen and works within minutes to ease anxiety, reduce sensitivity, and help you feel light, warm, and relaxed. You remain fully awake and responsive throughout the procedure, and the effects wear off shortly after the gas is stopped.
Who Is Nitrous Oxide Sedation For?
Nitrous oxide is ideal for patients who:
- Experience mild to moderate dental anxiety
- Prefer a lighter form of sedation without lingering drowsiness
- Want to drive themselves to and from the appointment
- Have a strong gag reflex
- Are undergoing short or minimally invasive procedures
- Are children or adults needing mild sedation
Who Should Avoid Nitrous Oxide?
Nitrous oxide may not be recommended for individuals who:
- Have significant respiratory conditions (e.g., COPD)
- Are unable to breathe comfortably through their nose
- Are in the first trimester of pregnancy
- Have B12 metabolism disorders (e.g., MTHFR deficiency)
- Have a history of substance use disorder
Dr. Sakhai will review your medical history in detail to determine if nitrous oxide is the safest option for you.
How It Works
1. Before Your Visit
No special preparation is usually needed. You may be advised to eat a light meal earlier in the day. There’s no need to arrange for a driver unless other sedation is being used in combination.
2. During the Procedure
A small nosepiece is placed to gently deliver a precise mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen. Within a few minutes, you’ll begin to feel calm, light, and possibly euphoric—but always awake and able to communicate. We continuously adjust the dosage to ensure you remain comfortable.
3. After the Procedure
Once your treatment is complete, the gas is turned off and you breathe pure oxygen for several minutes. The nitrous oxide leaves your system quickly, and you’ll feel completely normal again—able to return to your daily routine, including driving.

- No need for a driver or post-treatment recovery time in most cases
