Scaling & Root Planing

A Gentle Deep Cleaning to Help Restore Gum Health
If your gums bleed when you brush or feel tender and swollen, you may be experiencing the early signs of gum disease—known as gingivitis. When caught early, this condition is very treatable. However, if left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more advanced stage of gum disease that involves bone loss around the teeth.

One of the most effective non-surgical treatments for gum disease is a procedure called scaling and root planing—often referred to as a “deep cleaning.” This treatment removes harmful bacteria and hardened plaque, helping your gums heal and preventing further damage.

What Is Scaling and Root Planing?
Over time, plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) can build up on your teeth—forming tough, barnacle-like deposits called calculus beneath the gums. This buildup creates the ideal environment for bacteria to thrive, leading to red, inflamed, or bleeding gums.

  • Scaling removes these calcified deposits from above and below the gumline.
  • Root planing smooths the root surfaces to help the gums reattach to the teeth and prevent future buildup.

Together, these steps reduce inflammation, stop the progression of gum disease, and support your body’s natural healing process.

Why It Matters
If left untreated, gum disease can lead to serious problems like gum recession, bone loss, and even tooth loss. Scaling and root planing is a proven way to stop the disease from advancing—and to protect your long-term oral health.

What to Expect During the Procedure
Scaling and root planing is performed right here in our office. To ensure thorough care and comfortable healing, we usually treat the mouth in sections—such as one quadrant or one side at a time.

  • Comfort comes first. Early cases may not require anesthesia, but if your gums are sensitive or the infection is more advanced, we can gently numb the area to ensure your comfort.
  • Quick and effective. Most appointments take about an hour per section. You’ll leave feeling clean and refreshed—and your gums can begin healing right away.

Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile.
