For patients who want to be deeply relaxed—but still conscious—through their procedure
What Is IV Conscious Sedation?
IV conscious sedation uses a carefully administered intravenous medication to place you in a deeply relaxed, drowsy state while keeping you conscious and responsive. You won’t be “put to sleep,” but you may remember very little of the procedure itself. This makes IV sedation ideal for patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety, or for those undergoing more involved periodontal surgeries.
Unlike nitrous oxide or oral sedation, IV sedation allows your periodontist to adjust the level of sedation in real time, providing a higher degree of control and comfort throughout your visit.
Benefits of IV Sedation
- Deep relaxation without full unconsciousness
- Amnesia-like effect: you may remember little to nothing of the procedure
- Fast-acting and fully adjustable during treatment
- Stronger than oral or nitrous sedation
- Ideal for longer or more complex procedures
What to Expect
Before the Procedure
- You will need to fast for several hours before the procedure (we will provide specific instructions).
- A preoperative consultation will review your medical history and determine if IV sedation is appropriate.
- You must arrange for a responsible adult to escort you to and from the office and remain with you afterward.
During the Procedure
- A small IV line will be placed in your arm or hand.
- Sedative medication will be administered slowly and carefully to reach the desired level of relaxation.
- You’ll feel extremely calm and drowsy, but still be able to respond to verbal cues.
- Your vital signs will be continuously monitored for safety.
After the Procedure
- You may feel groggy for several hours.
- You will not be permitted to drive or return to work for the rest of the day.
- You’ll need someone to stay with you and help monitor your recovery.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
IV conscious sedation is recommended for patients who:
- Have moderate to severe dental anxiety
- Have a history of traumatic dental experiences
- Are undergoing complex periodontal surgery or long appointments
- Have difficulty becoming numb with local anesthesia alone
- Prefer not to be aware of the sights, sounds, or sensations during treatment
Who Should Not Use IV Sedation?
IV sedation may not be appropriate if you:
- Have severe or uncontrolled respiratory, cardiovascular, or metabolic conditions
- Are allergic to the medications used in IV sedation
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have a history of adverse reactions to anesthesia
- Do not have someone to accompany and monitor you post-procedure
Dr. Sakhai will thoroughly review your medical history and treatment goals before recommending IV sedation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I be asleep?

Is it safe?
Yes. IV sedation is extremely safe when administered by trained professionals with proper monitoring. Your vital signs will be continuously observed throughout.
Will I feel pain?
No. Local anesthesia will be used along with the IV sedative, ensuring you feel no discomfort during treatment.
Can I eat before the procedure?
You must fast for 6–8 hours before IV sedation. We will give you exact preoperative instructions during your consultation.
Can I go back to work afterward?
No. You’ll need to rest for the remainder of the day and have someone stay with you. You should not operate machinery or make important decisions for at least 24 hours.
