Oral Conscious Sedation

1 What Is Oral Sedation?
Oral sedation is a safe, effective way to help patients relax during periodontal procedures. It involves taking a prescribed sedative pill before your appointment to ease anxiety, reduce tension, and make your visit more comfortable—while still allowing you to remain conscious and responsive. Many patients describe the experience as feeling drowsy, calm, and disconnected from the sensations of the procedure. In most cases, the memory of the appointment is minimal or entirely absent.

Who Can Benefit from Oral Sedation?
Oral sedation is ideal for patients who:

  • Feel anxious or fearful about dental visits
  • Have a low pain threshold or sensitive gag reflex
  • Are undergoing longer or more involved surgical procedures
  • Have had traumatic dental experiences in the past
  • Prefer to feel more at ease throughout treatment

Who Should Not Receive Oral Sedation?
Although oral sedation is safe for most patients, it may not be appropriate for individuals with certain medical conditions or risk factors. Dr. Sakhai will evaluate your health history to determine if sedation is a safe option for you. Oral sedation may not be recommended for patients who:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have severe sleep apnea or respiratory conditions
  • Have impaired liver function or kidney disease
  • Are currently taking medications that interact with sedatives
  • Have a history of allergic reactions to benzodiazepines
  • Struggle with substance misuse or dependence
  • Are unable to arrange for an escort to and from the appointment

If you fall into one of these categories, alternative options like local anesthesia or nitrous oxide may be more suitable.

What to Expect

  1. Before Your Visit
You’ll be given a prescription for an oral sedative (such as triazolam or lorazepam) to take at home about one hour before your appointment. You must arrange for someone to drive you to and from the office, as you will not be able to drive yourself.
  2. During the Procedure
You will feel deeply relaxed, possibly drowsy, but still able to respond to verbal cues. Time may seem to pass more quickly, and you may have little to no memory of the procedure afterward.
  3. After Your Visit
You’ll continue to feel the sedative effects for several hours after your appointment. A friend or family member should accompany you home and stay with you until the medication has worn off.

Is Oral Sedation Safe?
Yes. Oral sedation is a widely used, well-researched option in dentistry. Your medical history, current medications, and any health conditions will be thoroughly reviewed before sedation is prescribed to ensure safety.

At Dr. Sakhai’s office, your vital signs will be monitored throughout the procedure, and you will be cared for by a trained team experienced in sedation dentistry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be asleep?
No. Oral sedation does not put you fully to sleep like general anesthesia. You will remain awake but deeply relaxed. Many patients doze lightly during the procedure.

How long does the effect last?
The calming effects can last anywhere from 4 to 8 hours depending on the medication and your individual response. You should plan to take the rest of the day off and not return to work or operate heavy machinery.

Is oral sedation covered by insurance?
Some insurance plans may partially cover sedation in certain cases. Our team can help check your benefits and provide a cost estimate beforehand.
