Sedation FAQ

Safe, Effective Options to Help You Relax in the Dental Chair

Dental anxiety is extremely common—and very manageable. At our office, we offer multiple sedation options tailored to your comfort level, medical history, and the complexity of your treatment. Whether you need to take the edge off your nerves or want to be deeply relaxed during surgery, there’s a sedation method that fits your needs.

Why Sedation?

  • Makes lengthy or complex procedures more comfortable
  • Reduces fear, anxiety, and stress
  • Helps patients with a strong gag reflex or difficulty getting numb
  • Allows for more efficient treatment—sometimes multiple procedures in one visit
  • Can improve your relationship with dental care long-term

Types of Sedation We Offer

1. Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

  • Inhaled through a small nosepiece
  • Fast-acting and completely reversible within minutes
  • You remain fully awake but relaxed
  • You can drive yourself home afterward
  • Great for children and adults with mild dental anxiety

2. Oral Sedation

  • A prescribed pill (like triazolam or diazepam), taken before your visit
  • Produces a deeper sense of calm, often with mild drowsiness
  • Most patients remember little of the procedure
  • You’ll need someone to drive you home
  • Ideal for moderate dental anxiety or longer procedures

3. IV Conscious Sedation

  • Delivered directly into the bloodstream during your procedure
  • Provides deep relaxation without putting you fully to sleep
  • We monitor you closely the entire time
  • Best suited for patients with significant dental anxiety or surgical needs
  • Requires an escort and recovery time

4. Anxiolysis (Minimal Oral Sedation)

  • A very light dose of a sedative to “take the edge off”
  • You’ll feel calm but stay fully alert
  • Often used for non-surgical treatments or patients with mild stress only

Is Sedation Safe?

Yes. All sedation options we provide are FDA-approved and administered under strict safety protocols. Your vital signs are monitored throughout your procedure, and we conduct a full review of your medical history before recommending sedation.

Who Should Avoid Sedation?

Sedation may not be suitable for people with:

  • Severe respiratory disorders (e.g., COPD)
  • Certain heart or liver conditions
  • Active substance abuse
  • Allergies to sedatives
  • Pregnancy (depending on trimester and type of sedation)

Dr. Sakhai will assess whether sedation is safe for you and recommend alternatives if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be asleep?

No, unless you choose IV sedation. Most sedation methods help you relax deeply while remaining responsive.

Is sedation covered by insurance?

Some plans cover it if anxiety or a medical condition is documented. We can check your benefits ahead of time.

Can children be sedated?

Yes. Nitrous oxide is especially safe and effective for pediatric patients.

Will I feel pain?

All sedation is paired with local anesthesia, so you’ll remain comfortable throughout your visit.
