Prescription Fluoride Toothpaste
Clinpro™ 5000 • Prevident® 5000 • Generic Sodium Fluoride 1.1%
What Is Prescription Fluoride Toothpaste?
Prescription fluoride toothpaste contains a higher concentration of fluoride than over-the-counter toothpastes. Designed to help strengthen enamel, reduce tooth sensitivity, and prevent cavities, it is especially beneficial for patients at higher risk for dental decay. At our office, we dispense Clinpro™ 5000, a trusted formula that also contains tricalcium phosphate to enhance fluoride uptake. When prescribed through a pharmacy, patients may receive Prevident® 5000 or a generic equivalent containing 1.1% sodium fluoride.
Why Might You Need Prescription Fluoride Toothpaste?
You may benefit from prescription-strength fluoride toothpaste if you have:
- A history of frequent cavities
- Exposed root surfaces due to gum recession
- Dry mouth (xerostomia) from medications or medical conditions
- Orthodontic appliances, crowns, bridges, or dental implants
- Increased sensitivity to cold or sweets
- High cariogenic risk due to diet or oral hygiene challenges
How to Use Prescription Fluoride Toothpaste
For maximum benefit, follow these instructions:
- Brush once daily at bedtime (unless otherwise directed by your dentist).
- Use a pea-sized amount on a soft-bristled toothbrush.
- Brush thoroughly for two minutes, making sure to cover all tooth surfaces.
- Do not rinse, eat, or drink for at least 30 minutes after brushing to allow the fluoride to absorb.
- Do not swallow the toothpaste.
Note: Continue using your regular toothpaste for morning brushing unless instructed otherwise.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: What’s the difference between Clinpro™ 5000, Prevident® 5000, and generics?
A: All contain 1.1% sodium fluoride (5000 ppm fluoride), but Clinpro™ 5000 includes a unique calcium phosphate system to enhance fluoride delivery. Prevident® and generics are effective but may differ slightly in taste or consistency.
Q: Is this safe for long-term use?
A: Yes, when used as directed. Prescription fluoride toothpaste is safe and effective for long-term cavity prevention under the supervision of your dental provider.
Q: Can I use it more than once per day?
A: Usually, once daily is sufficient. Do not substitute it for regular fluoride toothpaste unless your dentist advises.
Q: Is this toothpaste covered by insurance?
A: It is sometimes covered with a prescription, depending on your dental or pharmacy benefits. We dispense Clinpro™ 5000 directly for your convenience, which may not require insurance billing.
Q: Are there any side effects?
A: Side effects are rare but may include mild mouth irritation if overused. Swallowing large amounts regularly may lead to fluorosis, which is why supervised use is essential.
Q: What if I accidentally swallow it?
A: A small accidental amount is not dangerous. If a large amount is ingested, contact your dentist or physician.
