Frenectomy

Enhancing Comfort, Function, and Oral Health
The frenum is a small fold of tissue that connects the lips, cheeks, or tongue to the gum and surrounding structures. In some individuals, an overly tight or thick frenum can interfere with speech, feeding, or oral hygiene—and even cause gum recession or gaps between teeth. A frenectomy is a quick, precise surgical procedure to remove or reposition this tissue for better function and health.

Why Is a Frenectomy Performed?

  • Tongue-Tie (Ankyloglossia): When the lingual frenum under the tongue is too short or tight, it restricts movement. This can affect speech, swallowing, or breastfeeding in infants.
  • Lip-Tie: A thick labial frenum (between the upper lip and gum) can cause a gap between the front teeth or pull on the gums, contributing to gum recession.
  • Orthodontic Support: In some cases, removing the frenum helps prevent relapse after orthodontic treatment or improves the success of prosthetics and dentures.
  • Gum Health: In cases where a high or tight frenum contributes to tissue irritation or difficulty brushing, a frenectomy helps reduce trauma and support better hygiene.

The Procedure
Performed under local anesthesia and often completed in just a few minutes, the frenectomy can be done using a scalpel or laser, depending on the specific case. Most patients experience minimal discomfort and a smooth recovery. Dr. Sakhai performs frenectomies with attention to precision and tissue preservation, minimizing trauma and optimizing healing.

Recovery and Expectations
Healing is generally quick and uneventful. Mild swelling or discomfort is normal and can be managed with over-the-counter medications. You may be given specific instructions for stretching exercises, especially in tongue-tie cases, to promote proper movement and prevent reattachment.
