Post Surgical Diet

What to Eat After Dental Surgery
Soft, Nourishing Foods to Support Healing
After dental surgery, such as gum grafting, crown lengthening, extractions, implant procedures, or deep cleanings, your mouth needs time to heal. Choosing the right foods can help reduce irritation, prevent complications, and make recovery more comfortable.
For the first week or two, stick to soft, mild, easy-to-chew foods that won’t disturb sutures or sensitive areas. The goal is to stay nourished while keeping your healing tissues undisturbed.

Recommended Foods After Dental Surgery
These foods are gentle on your gums and still provide the nutrients your body needs:

Protein & Soft Main Dishes

  • Soft baked or shredded chicken (moist, finely chopped)
  • Flaky baked or poached fish (tilapia, cod, salmon)
  • Ground beef or turkey (in soft preparations like meatloaf or soft tacos)
  • Eggs (scrambled, poached, or soft-boiled)
  • Tofu (steamed or lightly sautéed)
  • Cottage cheese or ricotta

Grains & Starches

  • Mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, or cauliflower mash
  • White rice, soft-cooked brown rice, or quinoa
  • Pasta (soft and not spicy)
  • Oatmeal, cream of wheat, or grits
  • Soft polenta
  • Pancakes or waffles (no crunchy edges, avoid syrup if sensitive)

Fruits & Vegetables

  • Applesauce
  • Bananas (ripe and sliced or mashed)
  • Avocado (mashed or sliced thin)
  • Steamed carrots, squash, zucchini (well-cooked and soft)
  • Smoothies (without seeds or chunks)
  • Canned peaches, pears, or mandarin oranges (in juice, not syrup)

Dairy & Soft Sides

  • Yogurt (plain or low sugar, no granola or seeds)
  • Pudding or custard
  • Macaroni and cheese
  • Soft cheeses (brie, mozzarella, cream cheese)
  • Milkshakes or protein shakes (no straws)

Treats & Extras

  • Ice cream, frozen yogurt, or sorbet (avoid hard mix-ins)
  • Jell-O
  • Broths and creamy soups (not too hot and avoid chunky ingredients)

Foods to Avoid While Healing
Avoid anything that could disturb the healing site, increase irritation, or get trapped under the gum:

  • Crunchy foods (chips, toast, crackers, granola, nuts)
  • Chewy or sticky foods (bagels, gum, dried fruit, caramels)
  • Spicy or heavily seasoned foods
  • Acidic foods (citrus, tomatoes, vinegar-based dressings)
  • Very hot foods or beverages
  • Alcohol (slows healing and may interact with medications)
  • Foods with small seeds or grains (strawberries, seeded bread, popcorn)
  • Straws (can disrupt healing through suction)

Additional Tips:

  • Chew on the opposite side of your mouth if possible.
  • Drink plenty of water—sip gently, no straws.
  • Rinse with warm salt water after meals if recommended.
  • Avoid vigorous chewing, even on soft foods, during the first several days.

Healing starts with smart choices.
