Post-Treatment Instructions: Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)
Thank you for receiving Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) treatment. This quick, non-invasive procedure helps stop the progression of tooth decay and reduce sensitivity. Below are guidelines to help you care for your teeth after the application.
What to Expect After SDF Treatment
- The treated areas of decay will darken or turn black over the next 24–48 hours. This is normal and expected—it indicates that the decay is no longer active.
- Healthy tooth structure and gum tissue will not stain.
- There may be a temporary metallic taste in the mouth, which fades within a few hours.
- Some patients may notice slight gum irritation or staining if the material contacts the soft tissue. This typically resolves without treatment within 1–2 days.
Eating and Drinking
- Avoid eating or drinking for at least 30 minutes after treatment to allow the material to fully absorb.
- After this period, you may resume your normal diet.
- For young children, avoid sticky or crunchy foods on the day of treatment if advised by your dentist.
Oral Hygiene
- Continue regular brushing and flossing as instructed.
- Avoid aggressive brushing in the treated area for the first 24 hours.
- Your dentist may prescribe or recommend a fluoride toothpaste (such as Clinpro™ 5000 or Prevident® 5000) to further strengthen the enamel after treatment.
Follow-Up Care
- SDF may need to be reapplied in 2–4 weeks or at future visits for best results.
- Depending on the location and severity of decay, your dentist may:
- Monitor the area with no further treatment
- Recommend a minimally invasive restoration (e.g., sealant or filling) later for strength or esthetics
- Combine SDF with other cavity management techniques
Important Reminders
- SDF is a decay-arresting treatment, not a restorative one. It does not rebuild lost tooth structure.
- If the treated tooth breaks, causes discomfort, or appears to worsen, contact our office for evaluation.
- The black staining is cosmetic only and can often be covered later if desired.
