Emdogain: Regenerating Healthy Gum and Bone Tissue

Rebuilding more than just support—regenerating natural tissue for long-term periodontal health.

1

What Is Emdogain?
Emdogain® is a biologically active gel used during periodontal surgery to help regenerate lost gum and bone tissue caused by periodontal disease. It contains enamel matrix proteins that mimic the natural process your body used to form the tissues that support your teeth during early development. Rather than simply repairing damage, Emdogain encourages the body to rebuild the lost attachment—creating new bone, cementum, and periodontal ligament.

When Is Emdogain Used?
Dr. Sakhai may recommend Emdogain as part of your periodontal treatment when:

  • There is bone loss around teeth due to gum disease
  • You are undergoing a gingival graft or bone graft
  • You are undergoing pocket reduction or flap surgery
  • You have deep periodontal pockets with attachment loss
  • There is a defect or crater in the bone that may benefit from regeneration

It’s most effective in certain types of bone defects and can significantly improve the long-term stability of natural teeth.

How Does It Work?
After the gum tissue is lifted and the area is cleaned, Emdogain is applied directly to the root surface. This gel signals your body to restart the tissue development process, leading to:

  • New bone growth
  • Regeneration of periodontal ligament
  • Improved attachment of the gums to the tooth

The treatment is performed during your periodontal surgery and adds no extra recovery time.

Benefits of Emdogain

  • Promotes true tissue regeneration, not just repair
  • Can reduce pocket depth and increase tooth stability
  • Biocompatible and derived from natural sources
  • Safe, with over two decades of clinical success
