Frequently Asked Questions
About Gum Grafting
Is gum grafting painful?
We make your comfort a priority. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, and most patients report minimal discomfort afterward. If tissue is taken from the roof of your mouth, you may have some soreness in that area for a few days, similar to a minor pizza burn. Over-the-counter or prescribed pain relief is usually all that’s needed.
How long does it take to heal?
Most patients heal within 1–2 weeks. The grafted area may appear slightly swollen or tender during the first few days, but that’s normal. We provide detailed home care instructions and schedule follow-up visits to make sure everything is healing as expected.
Can I eat normally after gum grafting?
You’ll need to stick to a soft food diet for the first week or possibly two (think yogurt, smoothies, eggs, pasta, chicken, fish steamed vegetables). Avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods while the area is healing. We'll give you a clear list of what to eat, and what to avoid, to keep your recovery smooth.
Will the graft look natural?
Yes. The goal of gum grafting is not only to restore gum health but to create a natural, seamless appearance. Once healed, the grafted tissue blends in with the surrounding gumline.
Why can’t I just leave the gum recession untreated?
Exposed tooth roots are more sensitive, more prone to decay, and more vulnerable to bone loss over time. Gum grafting helps protect the roots and bone, reducing the risk of more serious problems in the future that can lead to tooth loss.
What kind of graft will I need?
It depends on your case. Dr. Sakhai will explain your options, which may include using your own tissue (typically from the palate) or donor tissue that has been processed and sterilized for safety. Both are effective and widely used in modern periodontal care.
