Gingival Depigmentation – FAQ

What is gingival depigmentation?

Gingival depigmentation is a cosmetic procedure that lightens or removes dark pigmentation from the gums. This discoloration is typically caused by melanin deposits and is harmless, but many patients choose treatment to achieve a more uniform, pink appearance for aesthetic reasons.

Is this treatment only for cosmetic purposes?

Yes. Darkened gums are usually a genetic trait and do not affect the health of your teeth or gums. Depigmentation is done strictly for aesthetic enhancement and patient confidence.

Does the procedure hurt?

The treatment is minimally invasive. We apply a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable throughout. Most patients report little to no pain during or after the procedure.

How is the pigment removed?

Pigmented areas are treated using a gentle  Nd:Yag laser  to remove the top layer of gum tissue where the pigment resides. As the gums heal, they appear lighter and more even in color.

How long does healing take?

Initial healing usually takes 7–10 days. Some patients may experience mild sensitivity or tenderness during that time. We'll provide clear instructions to help you heal comfortably.

Will the pigment come back?

In many cases, the results are long-lasting. However, some pigmentation may return over time, especially in patients with naturally high melanin levels. Touch-up treatments can be performed if needed.

Is it safe?

Yes—gingival depigmentation is a safe procedure when performed by a trained periodontist. We take every precaution to ensure your comfort and safety.
