Ultrasonic Scaling – FAQ

3

Q: Do you use ultrasonic scaling instead of hand instruments?

A: No — we use it in combination with hand instruments. The ultrasonic scaler removes heavy deposits quickly, and hand scaling allows for detailed finishing and precision.

Q: Is ultrasonic cleaning better than traditional scraping?

A: Each method has its strengths. Ultrasonic scaling is faster and less physically intense and can sometimes reach deeper into the pocket, while hand scaling allows for control in tighter or more sensitive areas. Together, they deliver the best result.

Q: Is this used for all cleanings?

A: We commonly use ultrasonic scaling during periodontal therapy and maintenance. For routine cleanings, its use depends on your oral health needs, preference, and the amount of buildup present.

Q: Does ultrasonic scaling hurt?

A: Some patients find it more comfortable than traditional scraping. The tip vibrates gently, and the water spray keeps the area cool and rinsed.

Q: Are there any downsides to ultrasonic scaling?

A: While ultrasonic scaling is highly effective, it’s not ideal in every situation. The vibrating tip and water spray can sometimes cause mild sensitivity, especially for patients with exposed root surfaces. Patients who have respiratory issues or are sensitive to aerosols may also prefer limited use of the ultrasonic scaler. Additionally, heavy restorations or deep grooves may require manual instruments for complete cleaning.

Q: Will I be numb for this procedure?

A: Depending on the depth of cleaning or your level of sensitivity, we may apply a topical anesthetic or use localized anesthesia to ensure your comfort.

Q: Can ultrasonic scaling damage teeth or gums?

A: When used correctly, ultrasonic scalers are very safe. However, improper technique or excessive force can potentially lead to surface roughening or discomfort, which is why we always pair ultrasonic scaling with precise hand instrumentation and careful technique.

Q: Is ultrasonic scaling messy or noisy?

A: The scaler does create a fine water mist and emits a high-pitched sound, which some patients find distracting. We do our best to minimize this by using high-volume suction and ensuring your comfort throughout the procedure.
