Zirconia Implant FAQ

1

What makes zirconia implants different from titanium implants?

Zirconia implants are made from a ceramic material called zirconium dioxide, which is completely metal-free. They are often chosen by patients with metal sensitivities, or those looking for a more holistic, aesthetic option. Unlike titanium, zirconia is white, which helps it blend more naturally beneath the gums.

Who should consider zirconia implants?

Zirconia implants are a great choice for patients who:

  • Prefer metal-free dentistry
  • Have known sensitivities or allergies to metals
  • Have thin or translucent gum tissue where aesthetics are a concern
  • Are looking for a holistic or biocompatible alternative

Are zirconia implants available for everyone?

While zirconia implants are a great solution for many patients, they may not be ideal for all full-mouth or complex cases. During your consultation, Dr. Sakhai will assess your needs and help determine whether zirconia or titanium implants are the best choice for you.

Are there any disadvantages to zirconia implants?

Yes, while zirconia implants offer great aesthetics and are metal-free, there are a few things to consider:

  • Less Flexible Design: Most zirconia implants are one-piece, which can limit options for certain restorations.
  • Less Long-Term Research: Titanium implants have decades of proven success; zirconia has promising results but shorter-term data.
  • Brittle Compared to Titanium: Though strong, zirconia can be more prone to fracture under heavy biting forces.
  • Requires Very Precise Placement: These implants are less forgiving of angulation errors, so careful planning (like with CBCT scans and surgical guides) is essential.

Are zirconia implants strong enough?

Yes. Zirconia is a highly durable material with excellent compressive strength. While titanium may be more flexible under stress, zirconia implants are well-suited for many single-tooth and small bridge cases and have a high success rate when properly planned and placed.

Is there a difference in healing between zirconia and titanium implants?

The healing process is very similar. Like titanium implants, zirconia implants undergo osseointegration, where the implant bonds with your jawbone. Healing times depend on the individual, but generally range from 3–6 months before a permanent restoration is placed.

Do zirconia implants look more natural?

In many cases, yes. Because zirconia is white, it can provide a more natural look near the gumline—especially in patients with thin or light-colored gums. This reduces the risk of a grayish shadow sometimes seen with titanium implants.

Are zirconia implants safe?

Zirconia implants are FDA-approved and considered highly biocompatible. They resist corrosion, have a low risk of allergic reaction, and are less prone to plaque buildup, which may contribute to better gum health.

Is zirconia really metal-free?

Yes. While zirconia is derived from zirconium—a metal—it becomes zirconium dioxide (ZrO₂) through a chemical transformation that turns it into a ceramic, not a metal. In its final form, zirconia is non-metallic, non-conductive, and highly biocompatible, making it a true metal-free option. This makes zirconia implants ideal for patients with metal sensitivities or those seeking holistic, metal-free alternatives.

Do zirconia implants cost more?

They can be slightly more expensive than titanium implants due to the materials and specialized systems used. However, the long-term benefits in aesthetics, comfort, and biocompatibility make them a worthwhile investment for many patients.

How do I care for zirconia implants?

Care for zirconia implants is similar to natural teeth. Daily brushing, flossing, and routine check-ups are essential. Zirconia’s smooth surface can help reduce plaque accumulation, but good oral hygiene is still key to long-term success.
